CHAPTER TWELVE
Natasha craned her neck and peered out the window at the slow-moving car. It never sped up and then it slipped out of sight down a hill headed toward town. She tensed, feeling a knot in her stomach. Maybe that was the man who wanted to kill her. The car heâd been driving was very generic and dark in color. It was possible he was looking for a place to turn around and come back this way. It could also just be a curious onlooker. They couldnât take a chance.
âHey, Ted.â Landonâs pilot friend must have picked up. Landon glanced over at her and then spoke into the phone. âCan you hold on for just a second?â He handed her the phone and shifted into Reverse. âIf you could talk to him and tell him what we need, that would be great.â
Landon pulled out of the lot, turned down a residential street and kept driving.
âTed,â she said, âthis is Natasha. Iâm a friend of Landonâs. We need to charter your plane as soon as possible.â
âThat might be a possibility,â Ted responded, âit depends on where youâre going. This storm is still affecting parts of the state, and flying is not a good idea.â
Her spirits sank. If they couldnât escape by plane, what were they going to do?
Ted piped up. âWhere is it you wanted to go?â
She pulled the phone away from her ear and addressed Landon. âWhatâs the name of the place we need go?â
âPirta Bay,â he told her.
She repeated the village name into the phone.
âJust a second,â Ted said. âLet me check the conditions in that direction.â She heard the sound of Ted typing on a keyboard.
Her stomach tied into a knot. If they couldnât get out by plane, that left driving. Many of the roads probably still werenât cleared, and they were way more vulnerable in a car. Alaska really didnât have much of a highway system.
Landon pulled onto another residential street and then turned down an alley where no one would be able to spot them.
âThank you.â She handed him back the phone and listened to the one-sided conversation.
âHey, Ted, itâs me on the line⦠Okay⦠Two hours⦠Sure we can be there. See you then.â
She breathed a sigh of relief. âHe can take us?â
Landon clicked off the phone. âHeâll meet us at the marina where Gary was caught. Weâve got some time. We need to go to the store and get some things. There is not much in the village. Their supplies are brought in by plane.â
âI have supplies back at my house in my car,â she said.
âBest to stay where there are people, donât you think? Besides, what if the road to your house isnât plowed yet? The last thing we want to do is get stuck in the middle of nowhere when we have flight to catch.â
The truth was, whether she was in a crowd or by herself, Natasha never completely dropped her guard. All the same, she nodded. âOkay.â
Landon turned the SUV back on and rolled down the alley.
